[Financial News] Former Chairperson Lee Jin-sook has appealed the prosecution’s decision to dismiss charges against Acting National Police Agency Commissioner Yoo Jae-sung and Democratic Party Representative Shin Jung-hoon. Lee had accused them of abuse of power for demanding a forced investigation against her.
On February 10, sources from the prosecution revealed that the Seoul Western District Prosecutor’s Office had dismissed allegations of abuse of authority against Yoo and Shin (Chair of the National Assembly’s Public Administration and Security Committee) on December 9 last year, citing lack of evidence. Lee’s legal team reportedly filed an appeal against this decision on January 7.
Last August, during a plenary session of the National Assembly’s Public Administration and Security Committee, Lee filed a complaint against Rep. Shin for allegedly pressuring Acting Commissioner Yoo to conduct a forced investigation and detain her. She also accused Yoo of abuse of power, claiming he instructed the National Investigation Headquarters to expedite the investigation into her case.
During the August committee meeting, Rep. Shin had stated to Acting Commissioner Yoo, “I believe we should swiftly conduct a forced investigation, and if evidence of wrongdoing surfaces, we must not hesitate to make an arrest.” Yoo responded by assuring that he would direct the National Investigation Headquarters to conduct a prompt investigation.
At the time, Lee was under police investigation for alleged breach of trust. She was accused of misusing corporate credit cards for personal expenses during her tenure as president of Daejeon MBC from March 2015 to January 2018, reportedly causing financial damage to the company.
Sources indicate that the prosecution found it difficult to construe the statements made during the National Assembly committee meeting and the subsequent internal police directives as an abuse of authority.
