Joo Jeong-bong has officially declared his intention to run for mayor of Daejeon’s Seo-gu district in the upcoming local elections scheduled for June 3rd.
During a press conference held on March 10th at the Daejeon City Council, Joo launched his campaign with the slogan, “A City Where Residents Are the Owners, Thriving Together in Seo-gu.”
Joo outlined his vision to develop Seo-gu as a growth hub for the newly integrated Chungnam-Daejeon Special City. His plan includes attracting 1 trillion KRW (750 million USD) of the 20 trillion KRW (15 billion USD) special city subsidy into the artificial intelligence (AI) sector. This investment aims to create a science park-style AI startup valley, boosting both youth employment and the local economy.
Joo also unveiled targeted development strategies for different areas. For the Dunsan district, he promised improved residential environments through reconstruction. In the original downtown areas, including Domah, Boksu, Jeongnim, Gajang, Gwaejeong, Naedong, and Byeondong, he pledged to restore vitality through urban regeneration. His proposals include establishing a multipurpose cultural park in the Gwanjeo and Doan districts and exploring the introduction of a solar energy pension program in the Giseong area. Addressing welfare and education, Joo committed to tackling welfare gaps and transforming Seo-gu into an AI education hub. His long-term vision encompasses strategies to enhance the status of the five district centers within the integrated special city and elevate the city’s overall standing.
Joo proposed a citizen-led initiative to rename Seo-gu, aiming to redefine the district’s identity. He also suggested repurposing the current Daejeon City Hall for administrative redistribution in the new integrated era.
