Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-baek has called on Rep. Park Chung-kwon of the People Power Party to apologize to the military and the public for his inflammatory remarks suggesting that “the armed forces are catering to Kim Jong Un’s whims.”

On the 10th, Minister Ahn took to social media to address Park’s comments, stating, “I was informed of a deeply troubling incident in the National Assembly. It’s unconscionable that anyone would make such statements about our military.”

He continued, “While it’s acceptable to critique government policies and even the minister, there are boundaries that shouldn’t be crossed. Language that would be considered inappropriate in public discourse has no place in parliamentary questioning.”

Ahn emphatically stated, “As the Secretary of Defense, I want to make it clear: our military has always been, and will continue to be, dedicated solely to safeguarding our nation and its citizens. We will remain steadfast in our duty, serving only the interests of the Korean people.”

He added, “If Rep. Park recognizes the gravity of his position, I urge him to cease making excuses and offer a sincere apology to the military and the public for his reckless remarks. This is the least he can do to show respect for the constituents who elected him to office.”

During a parliamentary questioning session the previous day, Park had criticized Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, claiming, “The military is failing to fulfill its primary mission of deterring North Korean threats. They lack threat assessment capabilities, countermeasures, discipline, and training. Everything is missing except for one thing: pandering to Kim Jong Un’s ego.”
