Former White House National Security Advisor John Bolton sat down with Arirang TV for an in-depth discussion on North Korea’s nuclear program, the U.S.-South Korea alliance, and broader international security issues.

Arirang TV will broadcast the segment titled “North Korea’s Nuclear Issue, U.S.-South Korea Alliance, and International Security Challenges and Prospects” featuring Bolton on February 11 at 8:30 PM.

Bolton, who was deeply involved in the 2019 Hanoi summit between the U.S. and North Korea, reflected on Pyongyang’s negotiation tactics. “North Korea has consistently demanded economic benefits upfront while promising denuclearization later,” he said. “Kim Jong Un seemed confident he could deceive the U.S. as he had in the past, but appeared taken aback when he didn’t secure the agreement he anticipated.”

Regarding future U.S.-North Korea summits, Bolton stated, “Kim Jong Un shows little interest in meeting with Trump again.” He added, “North Korea’s disinterest in resuming dialogue indicates they believe their ballistic missile and nuclear capabilities give them an edge in negotiations.”

Bolton expressed concern about the lack of attention to North Korea in U.S. policy, noting, “It’s alarming that North Korea has barely been mentioned during Trump’s first year in office.”

He also criticized Trump’s tariff strategy, which ignited a trade war, as detrimental to the U.S., its major trading partners, and the global economic system.

On Arctic and Greenland issues, Bolton remarked, “Trump severely mishandled the Greenland situation.” He emphasized the need for cooperation among South Korea, Japan, and NATO to counter China and Russia’s expanding influence in the Arctic and other strategic locations. Regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, he predicted, “The outlook for a diplomatic solution is pessimistic without fundamental security guarantees for Ukraine.”

Bolton described South Korea as “a developed nation with robust military capabilities and a major economic power.” He emphasized that strengthening South Korea’s cooperation in East Asia and the Indo-Pacific serves both its national interests and those of other nations wary of China’s future actions.

He positively assessed last year’s U.S.-South Korea summit, noting, “Given Trump’s emphasis on personal relationships with foreign leaders, it appears that trust-building between the U.S. and South Korea has gotten off to a good start.” Bolton underscored the importance of the U.S.-South Korea alliance, stating it “serves as a crucial deterrent against potential provocations from North Korea, Russia, and China, and plays a vital role in regional stability.”
