SK Oceanplant has officially inked a Master Ship Repair Agreement (MSRA) with the U.S. Navy on February 10, granting them the authority to participate in maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) operations for key naval vessels. This milestone follows their successful completion of the port security assessment conducted by the U.S. Navy’s Supply Systems Command in January, marking the final step in the administrative process.

The MSRA is a prestigious certification awarded by the U.S. Navy to domestic and allied shipyards, empowering certified facilities to directly engage in MRO projects for critical naval assets, including combat ships. Since its designation as a defense contractor in shipbuilding by the South Korean government in 2017, SK Oceanplant has demonstrated its expertise by successfully delivering over 30 vessels to the Republic of Korea Navy and Coast Guard. This new agreement now extends their capabilities to service U.S. Navy vessels.

Kang Young-kyu, CEO of SK Oceanplant, emphasized the significance of this development, stating, “Securing the MSRA represents a strategic milestone in our expansion into the global defense network. We are committed to broadening our partnerships with key allied navies and accelerating our penetration into the global MRO market.”

In related news, Heo Jae-jun, an analyst at Samsung Securities, offered his perspective on SK Oceanplant’s future prospects: “The company is poised for growth in operating profits this year, driven by an increased share of high-margin offshore wind projects. Additionally, the newly acquired U.S. Navy MRO contracts are expected to serve as a catalyst for medium to long-term growth.”
