Sergeant reprimands new recruit for smoking violation

During unit buddy duty, a sergeant witnessed a new recruit heading to the smoking area wearing slippers and smoking. When the sergeant pointed out the regulation violation, saying, “Don’t go to the smoking area in slippers,” the recruit retorted, “Even the officers do it.”
The sergeant reiterated, “Don’t break the rules,” but the recruit provoked him by saying, “Who are you to tell me?” The entire squad witnessed the incident.

Platoon leader assembles squad to criticize senior soldier

The recruit reported to the platoon leader that “the sergeant said something.” The platoon leader immediately gathered the squad and berated them, asking, “What makes senior soldiers better than new recruits?” He pressured the senior soldiers with a lecture, questioning why they were reprimanding new recruits.
The sergeant truthfully reported the incident through a “heart letter” (unit grievance counseling), but was instead transferred to another unit. This sparked a controversy over abuse by new recruits.

A symbolic case of rank culture reversal

The new recruit’s defiance towards a senior and the platoon leader’s criticism of the senior soldier signaled a collapse of traditional rank culture. This case was an exception amid a trend of decreasing misconduct, facilitated by easier reporting through widespread cell phone use.
