President Lee Jae-myung paid tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives in a military helicopter crash in Gapyeong County, Gyeonggi Province. On February 10, the President honored the sacrifice of Army aviation unit members who perished while conducting a training mission in extreme weather conditions. His official statement, released shortly after the incident, emphasized the soldiers’ dedication and sense of duty. The tragic news has sparked a wave of mourning across social media and throughout the nation.

That morning, President Lee specifically mentioned Sergeant Major Jung Sang-geun and Sergeant Jang Hee-sung on his X account. He expressed profound respect for the noble sacrifice of these two soldiers who died while carrying out their duties in harsh conditions.

The President highlighted that both servicemen maintained control of the aircraft until their final moments, commending their unwavering commitment to protecting civilian lives and safety. His remarks are viewed as a testament to not only the outcome of the accident but also the courageous decisions made by the soldiers during the incident.

President Lee also provided specific details about the crash site. He noted that the helicopter went down just tens of meters from residential areas, underscoring the potential for even greater casualties under different circumstances.

Nevertheless, he emphasized that the situation did not escalate into a major disaster, praising the soldiers’ actions for ultimately ensuring public safety. This acknowledgment underscores both the gravity of the accident and the significance of their sacrifice.

The President stressed that the dedication of military personnel underpins the daily lives of Korean citizens. He vowed to always remember that the nation’s peace is built on the foundation of true military sacrifice. Additionally, he expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, recognizing the deceased as proud sons, husbands, and fathers. While acknowledging the impossibility of fully comprehending the families’ grief, he pledged to ensure appropriate national honors and support for them.

Details of the accident were also reported. According to military authorities, an Army AH-1S Cobra helicopter crashed at approximately 9:45 AM the previous day while conducting emergency procedure training near Hyun-ri in Gapyeong County. The incident occurred about one hour after takeoff, around 11:04 AM. Two crew members, the pilot and co-pilot, were on board at the time of the crash.

Both soldiers were rushed to the hospital in cardiac arrest immediately after the accident but tragically did not survive. The emergency procedure training is designed to simulate unexpected situations, such as engine failure, to enhance response capabilities. Military officials are reportedly conducting a comprehensive review of the training protocols and the circumstances surrounding the accident. This incident has raised concerns about safety management and procedures in military aviation training.

The President’s message of condolence is seen as a clear demonstration of the nation’s commitment to honoring fallen service members. There is growing interest in the investigation into the cause of the accident, measures to prevent future occurrences, support for the bereaved families, and appropriate recognition for the fallen soldiers.
