New Specialized Industrial Complex to Support Defense Future Aviation Research Center… Aims to Become Hub for R&D, Testing, and Manufacturing

Major South Korean aerospace and defense firms are making strategic moves to secure footholds in the future aviation industry. Korean Air, LIG Nex1, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), and Hanwha Aerospace have agreed to collaborate on developing an industrial ecosystem centered in Taean, Chungcheongnam-do.
On the 10th, these industry leaders signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at the Taean Arts Center. The agreement, which includes Chungcheongnam-do, the Agency for Defense Development (ADD), and Congressman Seong Il-jong, aims to foster growth and investment in the future aviation sector.
The MOU outlines plans to establish cutting-edge research infrastructure around the Defense Future Aviation Research Center in Taean’s Cheonsuman B District. Participants will also work to secure funding and cooperation for business initiatives.
Chungcheongnam-do is spearheading the development of a specialized industrial complex linked to the research center. The province plans to enhance transportation networks, improve living conditions, and ensure adequate water and power supply to attract businesses. Administrative and financial support for corporate investments will also be provided.
The ADD will facilitate the establishment of related companies and gradually build up the research infrastructure.
Congressman Seong Il-jong has committed to securing budgets for the research center, industrial complex, and transportation infrastructure. He also plans to push for policy support through regulatory improvements and legislative adjustments.
The participating companies are exploring options to utilize the area near the research center as a hub for R&D, testing, and manufacturing. They also aim to drive job creation and industrial advancement through new facility investments.
Chungcheongnam-do Governor Kim Tae-heum stressed that fostering the future aviation industry requires more than just a research center. He called for an industrial complex where companies and their partners can cluster, urging firms to invest aggressively.
Congressman Seong added that once research facilities are operational and mass production begins, a large-scale production complex could be developed within Taean Enterprise City, potentially bringing significant economic benefits to the region.
The Defense Future Aviation Research Center project will see an investment of 329.4 billion KRW (approximately 247.05 million USD) from now through 2032. Plans include a 2.2 km runway, expandable to 2.7 km, along with hangars, laboratories, testing facilities, and a control tower.
Upon completion, the ADD intends to consolidate its nationwide drone R&D facilities at this site, establishing it as a comprehensive research and testing hub for the aviation sector.
However, some local politicians have voiced concerns about the military nature of the facilities. The Seosan-Taean District Committee of the Democratic Party issued a statement questioning the project’s implementation and location suitability.
