HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is making waves at the World Defense Show 2026 (WDS) as it ramps up efforts to secure contracts for Saudi Arabia’s next-generation frigate program. Now in its third year, the WDS has established itself as the Middle East’s premier defense exhibition and a cornerstone event in Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 strategy for defense industry self-reliance.

According to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries on February 10, the company is joining forces with LIG Nex1, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), and EOST to showcase cutting-edge shipbuilding technology and maritime defense capabilities in a joint exhibition space. The highlight of their display is the 6,000-ton export frigate HDF-6000, one of eight vessels presented, aimed at capturing a slice of Saudi Arabia’s naval modernization initiative.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries brings to the table its wealth of expertise gained from constructing world-class Aegis ships, including the Sejong the Great-class and Jeongjo the Great-class destroyers. This experience has been leveraged in developing the HDF-6000 frigate, an Aegis-class vessel boasting an expanded hull and significantly enhanced systems and performance.

The HDF-6000 is a versatile surface combatant designed for multi-domain operations, including anti-ship, anti-air, anti-submarine, and land-attack missions. Its advanced detection and tracking systems enable seamless engagement from target acquisition to interception. A key feature is its multi-function phased array radar, capable of simultaneously detecting, tracking, and supporting engagement of multiple threats. The integration of state-of-the-art electronic warfare sensors and sonar systems significantly bolsters its ability to counter complex threats. Notably, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries stands alone in Korea with its capability to integrate and construct Aegis-class combat systems.

At the WDS, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is presenting a comprehensive package solution for Saudi naval modernization. Drawing on its extensive experience in design, construction, and project management, including successes at Peru’s Sima Shipyard, the company is offering an integrated strategy encompassing local construction and maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services.

In line with Saudi Arabia’s localization requirements, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will propose a phased approach to maximize local content in frigate construction. The company plans to leverage the Saudi International Maritime Industries (IMI) shipyard, a joint venture with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and Saudi Aramco, as the cornerstone of its strategy. This approach aims to progressively increase local production of the HDF-6000.

Moreover, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is set to sign a joint memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Saudi Ministry of Investment and 12 South Korean firms, including LIG Nex1 and STX Engine, to establish a local supply chain. This MOU will outline cooperation strategies for the Saudi Industrial Participation Program (IPP) and coordinate market entry efforts. The IPP, a key component of Saudi Vision 2030, mandates 60% local content in defense contracts.

Joo Won-ho, President of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, emphasized, “Showcasing the HDF-6000 frigate, tailored to Saudi specifications, at the Middle East’s largest defense exhibition underscores our strategic commitment. We’re fully dedicated to securing contracts for Saudi Arabia’s next-generation frigate program through our localization strategy, centered on the IMI shipyard – the largest in the Middle East and North Africa region.”
