Trump Hints at Preference for Moderate Iranian Leadership

President Donald Trump addressed the ongoing power vacuum in Iran at the White House on Thursday, following four days of U.S. military operations against the Islamic Republic.

During a summit with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Trump confirmed the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, in recent strikes and expressed concerns about the country’s future leadership.

“Our biggest concern is that after our operations, someone equally detrimental to U.S. interests could seize power,” Trump stated. “That’s not the outcome we’re aiming for.” He emphasized, “We hope to see leadership that will steer Iran in a positive direction for its citizens.”

The President disclosed that the initial strike had eliminated 49 key Iranian leaders. “Today’s follow-up attack on the emerging leadership likely dealt another significant blow,” he added. “Many potential successors we had identified are now confirmed dead, and reports suggest additional casualties among other leadership groups.”

When asked about the possibility of Iran’s exiled crown prince, Reza Pahlavi, leading a future regime, Trump was noncommittal. “I haven’t given it much thought,” he said, “but someone currently in Iran, with popular support, might be better positioned. We’re aware of more moderate figures within the country.” This response hints at a preference for a U.S.-friendly, moderate leadership rather than the current hardline stance.

Trump drew parallels with recent events in Venezuela, noting that after the operation to detain President Nicolás Maduro in early January, the government structure remained intact. “Venezuela was a surprising case. Despite our intervention, the government persisted,” he remarked, adding that U.S.-Venezuela relations have since improved significantly.

These comments suggest that the administration may favor a gradual transition of power to a more conciliatory figure within Iran’s existing power structure, rather than pushing for abrupt, revolutionary change. However, this approach could potentially conflict with Trump’s earlier calls for Iranian citizens to overthrow their government, potentially stirring controversy.
