[Sports Today reporter Lim Si-ryeong] ‘Samakdo’ is targeting Vietnam and other Southeast Asian markets.
The film’s producers said on March 13 that it has logged a string of sales successes across Southeast Asia and is moving forward with a broader international rollout.
‘Samakdo’ centers on prophecies linked to a cult that disappeared after the Japanese colonial period and the hellish visions observed in a sealed-off village. Ahead of its domestic opening, the film ranked first in advance ticket sales among titles opening the same week, signaling strong audience interest.
Interest in ‘Samakdo’ has extended beyond Korea to Vietnam, where local distributors are finalizing plans for a theatrical release. Industry insiders say the film’s chilling K-occult sensibility and distinctive world-building are expected to resonate with local audiences when it reaches screens.
In addition to Vietnam, the film has secured distribution in key Southeast Asian territories including the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Cambodia, attracting attention overseas. With regional demand for Korean horror and occult fare on the rise, ‘Samakdo’ is preparing to meet international viewers.
By combining a cult-centered premise with a mysterious narrative, ‘Samakdo’ leans on the taut, atmospheric tension that defines Korean horror, and it is expected to capture the interest of genre fans across Southeast Asia.
