Provocative act in violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions

Seoul’s National Security Office at the Blue House convened an emergency security review with the Defense Ministry, the Joint Chiefs of Staff and other relevant agencies after North Korea launched about 10 ballistic missiles into the East Sea near Pyongyang.
The National Security Office assessed the launches’ implications for national security and reviewed required response measures. Officials ordered agencies to maintain heightened readiness, stressing the need for vigilance because the launches occurred during combined U.S.-South Korea military exercises.
The office denounced the launches as a provocative breach of U.N. Security Council resolutions and urged Pyongyang to halt immediately. It said it had briefed President Lee Jae-myung on the launches and the government’s response.
On the same day, North Korea fired about 10 ballistic missiles into the East Sea. South Korean and U.S. intelligence agencies are analyzing the missiles’ specifications, trajectories and ranges.
The launch was Pyongyang’s first into the East Sea since Jan. 27, 47 days earlier. It was also the third incident this year involving multiple missiles fired in a single salvo, and it is unusual for North Korea to launch roughly 10 missiles at once.
The launches came after U.S. President Donald Trump expressed willingness to engage in talks with Kim Jong Un.
