Daegu is launching a major effort to bring fresh tourism attractions and environmental upgrades to the Dongseong-ro area. Officials hope the Dongseong-ro tourism district will become a lively regional hub for visitors.
On March 13, the Jung-gu District Office said this year’s Dongseong-ro Tourism District Revitalization Plan includes 36 projects—from expanding visitor programming to improving the urban environment—and will invest 6.6 billion KRW (approximately $4,950,000).
Designated in July 2024, the Dongseong-ro tourism district spans about 1.16 km² (0.45 sq mi). This year the Time Warp Festa, which celebrates Dongseong-ro’s 1990s–2000s heyday, returns for its second run. The city will also stage the Chwita Parade, a traditional procession, along the stretch from Gyeongsanggamyeong Park to the old Jungang Police Substation.
Custom tours for international visitors will continue. The city will operate 38 local cultural guides who speak languages like English and Chinese, expand the foreign-themed Vivid Dongseong-ro tour, and broaden traditional herbal medicine experiences at the Yakryeongsi herbal market.
Downtown tourism infrastructure will also get an upgrade. Plans call for a Tour Station in the Bukseong-ro area with interactive exhibits and rest areas. The city will refresh the Dongseong-ro night alley and Tongsin Alley with improved streetscapes and reorganized spaces, and will install smart poles and streetlights, repair sidewalks, and upgrade major roadways to make walking more pleasant.
Promotion efforts will be stepped up as well. The Jung-gu District Office plans to attend international tourism and medical tourism expos, run fam tours for overseas media and industry, and produce global promotional videos to attract foreign visitors. It also plans to expand visitor services by running satisfaction surveys, operating a tourism complaint center, and creating multilingual menus.
“We plan to keep flagship programming running into 2026 to develop Dongseong-ro as a global destination focused on international visitors,” said Jeong Myeong-hee, head of tourism at the Jung-gu District Office. “We’ll boost global promotion through tailored tours, participation in overseas expos, and fam tours, and continuously improve visitor services and tourism infrastructure based on foreign visitor satisfaction surveys.”
