[RealFood=Reporter Yook Seong-yeon] Calling all young food innovators: the World Institute of Kimchi, a government-funded research institute under the Ministry of Science and ICT, announced on March 18 that it’s launching the Kimchi Startup Idea Competition.

The institute will host the contest with support from the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the National Research Council of Science & Technology, and Hyundai Department Store. The goal is simple—discover inventive startup ideas centered on kimchi-based processed foods and services and help bring them to market.

If you’re a South Korean citizen between 19 and 39, you’re eligible to apply. Prospective founders or leaders of companies under seven years old can enter solo or as a team. Ideas can span the kimchi industry—think new processed-food products, distribution platforms, subscription concepts, or data- and AI-driven services.

Applications are open from March 18 through April 17. Download the application and related forms from the World Institute of Kimchi website and email them to the contact listed.

The selection process has three stages: document screening, a public online vote, and a final presentation. Teams that clear the first round will get roughly five months to develop prototypes. The institute will offer technical guidance and information support, plus up to 20,000,000 KRW (about $15,000 USD) in prototype funding to help turn concepts into real products or services.

Five teams will be chosen as finalists and share total prize money of 11,000,000 KRW (about $8,250 USD), along with government and institutional certificates. The top prize winner will receive the Deputy Prime Minister of Science and ICT’s award and 5,000,000 KRW (about $3,750 USD). Winners will also gain opportunities to sell their products online and with major retailers.

The awards ceremony will be held during the WIKIM Festival, celebrating Kimchi Day on November 22. Prototypes developed through the competition will be showcased and available for tasting at the event. The grand prize winner will present their startup idea and commercialization results.

Jang Hae-chun, director of the World Institute of Kimchi, said, “For the kimchi industry to keep growing, we need innovation that builds new consumer markets while honoring the value of this traditional food. I hope this competition connects young entrepreneurs’ creative ideas with the institute’s technical expertise and opens fresh growth opportunities for the kimchi industry.”
