Gangwon Tourism Foundation launches one-day and overnight (two-day) humanities tours

Chuncheon — Reporter Lee Seong-hyun

The Gangwon Tourism Foundation is launching a Gangwon humanities-themed tour focused on Yeongwol and the life of Danjong, tapping into interest sparked by the recent hit film The Man Who Lived with the King. The foundation announced on the 22nd that the program will run on April 4, 5 and April 11–12. Each session will welcome up to 100 participants, and to offer more choices the foundation is providing both a one-day Yeongwol option and an overnight two-day Yeongwol–Jeongseon option.

The one-day itinerary visits Jangneung, Cheongnyeongpo, Seondol and the West Market. The overnight, two-day option adds stops like Gwanpungheon, the Arirang Museum and Arari Village, creating a richer, more immersive experience. On-site, visitors will also see an emotionally driven new madanggeuk that blends pansori narration with actors’ performances—designed to help audiences vividly recall Danjong’s story as seen in the film.

Choi Seong-hyun, the foundation’s CEO, expressed gratitude for the increase in visitors to Yeongwol following the film’s success and said he hopes the humanities tour will give participants a meaningful chance to reflect on Danjong’s life and historical significance while deepening their appreciation of the region’s cultural heritage.

Participants can apply for the humanities-themed tour via a Google Form, and details are posted in the Notices section of the Gangwon Tourism Foundation website (www.gwto.or.kr). Since 2024, the foundation has been offering humanities travel products that connect local tourism with themes such as Gwandongbyeolgok and the literature of Kim Yu-jeong.
