The People Power Party’s Central Women’s Committee demanded on March 27 that independent lawmaker Jang Kyung-tae, who left the Democratic Party of Korea amid allegations that he sexually assaulted a female aide, immediately resign his seat.
Committee members, including Rep. Seo Myeong-ok, issued a statement saying there is no other way for Rep. Jang to make amends to the victim and the public: he should resign from the National Assembly and fully cooperate with the prosecutors’ investigation.
Earlier, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s Women and Youth Crime Investigation Division referred Rep. Jang to prosecutors on charges of quasi-forcible indecency and violating confidentiality under the Sexual Violence Punishment Act.
The committee asked whether, even after the police review panel he requested recommended referral to prosecutors and the police ultimately decided to send the case to prosecutors, Rep. Jang will still claim he is the victim.
They added that over the past four months Rep. Jang’s conduct has gone beyond brazen denial to a pattern of deceiving the public, and stated:
The public clearly remembers not only the sexual crimes he is accused of but also the actions he allegedly took to cover them up. He no longer deserves to serve as a representative of the people or to hold his seat.
They also accused the Democratic Party of Korea of effectively enabling him—rather than taking decisive action against a suspect in a sexual crime—by allowing him to remain active on the National Assembly’s Legislation and Judiciary Committee, calling that behavior tantamount to secondary victimization. They urged the party to issue a formal apology to the victim and to the public.
