The Blue House has strongly rejected reports that South Korea is considering paying Iran a transit fee to allow its vessels to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
In a press release on April 2, the National Security Office called reports that the government is “carefully considering” paying such a fee baseless and said the idea is not under consideration.
The office said Seoul maintains that, consistent with international norms, freedom of navigation and the safety of all vessels — including South Korean ships — in the Strait of Hormuz must be guaranteed, and that the normalization of global energy supplies should be achieved quickly.
It added that the government is engaging in communication and cooperation with relevant countries to that end.
Earlier on April 2, one news outlet cited a senior Blue House official who said the government was, from a practical standpoint, carefully weighing the possibility of paying Iran a transit fee to secure passage through the strait.
