[Herald Economy (Gyeongju)=Reporter Kim Byung-jin] Gyeongju City in North Gyeongsang Province announced on the 8th that it will begin opening the Provincial Route 904 Gwangmyeong–Hwacheon connector, which links the new KTX Gyeongju station area with downtown, in stages starting on the 9th.

The project will widen Provincial Route 904 along a 1.6-kilometer stretch from Gwangmyeong-dong to Hwacheon-ri in Geoncheon-eup at a cost of 21.1 billion KRW (approximately 15.8 million USD).

Construction is roughly 95% complete. Officials said they will finish remaining work in phases and open sections sequentially from the 9th through the end of June.

Work is concentrated north of Gyeongju Station, running from Gwangmyeong Samgeori (three-way intersection) through the First Hwacheon Bridge to the Hwacheon 1-ri community center. Straightening and improving the route as a primary traffic artery into downtown should boost traffic efficiency.

Acting Mayor Choi Hyuk-jun said, “The Gwangmyeong–Hwacheon road is core infrastructure linking the new KTX Gyeongju station area and downtown. Phased openings will reduce inconvenience for residents and let them feel the benefits of improved traffic conditions sooner.”
