Delivery app rolls out new accessibility features ahead of Disability Day
AI will narrate photos of food
“On the golden-brown crust, one half is dotted with red pepperoni that looks ready to burst with juicy flavor; the other half is piled with sweet yellow corn, ham, and a luscious cheese sauce.”
Woowa Brothers, the operator of Baedal Minjok (Baemin), has developed a feature that uses artificial intelligence to describe food photos aloud, helping visually impaired users better navigate the app. The announcement came ahead of Disability Day (April 20).
The company says this feature is part of Baemin’s ongoing effort to improve accessibility so people with vision loss can browse and choose menu items just as easily as sighted users.
The AI analyzes images and verbally conveys a dish’s color, how well it’s cooked, and the visual shapes of key ingredients. Woowa Brothers built the system in collaboration with AI startup ‘ConnectBrick’.
Development began in February. Working with social venture ‘MissionIt’, Baemin tested the feature with 30 visually impaired participants at the Siloam Welfare Center for the Blind in Gwanak-gu, Seoul, from March 31 to April 2.
Baemin is now exploring ways to integrate these AI-powered food descriptions into its live service.
“We’re not treating this as charity,” said Kim Jung-hyun, head of Sustainable Management at Woowa Brothers. “By strengthening our core service functions, we aim to realize social value and actively fulfill our corporate social responsibility so everyone can enjoy technological benefits without discrimination.”
