Busan’s Gijang County announced on the 21st that the 30th Gijang Anchovy Festival — one of the nation’s top seafood celebrations — will be held at Daebyeon Port in Gijang-eup on April 24.

Organized by the Gijang Anchovy Festival Steering Committee, this milestone event is the county’s signature festival. To mark the 30th anniversary, officials have put together an even more colorful and varied program than usual.

The festivities kick off with an opening ceremony on the 24th and include hands-on experiences like boarding fishing boats, trying your luck at barehanded live-fish catching, enjoying the Anchovy Silver 樂 performance, and watching a sea fireworks show — plus plenty of other cultural activities.

The anniversary main stage will feature popular singers across the weekend. On the 24th, Jeong Seo-ju and Cheon Rok-dam will perform; on the 25th, Son Bin-ah, Chae Yoon, and Choi Ji-ye take the stage; and on the 26th, Mister Pang, Kim Soo-hee, and Jang Ha-on will appear.

Pre-registration was held for the Gijang Anchovy Song Contest: preliminaries take place on the 25th, with the final on the 26th. After the final, MCs Park Gun and Na Tae-ju will host the Taegun Singing Contest to keep the party going.

Free anchovy sashimi tastings will be available throughout the three-day festival, and visitors of all ages can join a variety of interactive programs to sample the true flavors of Gijang.

For convenience, free shuttle buses will run on weekends from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., shuttling between the Donghae Line Gijang Station second parking lot and the Mu-yang Village rotary.

Choi Il-cheon, chair of the Gijang Anchovy Festival Steering Committee, said the committee has prepared richer food offerings and more engaging attractions than ever to celebrate the 30th anniversary. “We hope you’ll join us in Gijang this warm spring to share in the joy of the anchovy festival and create special memories,” he added.
