Kwak Young-gwang Shines in MBN’s ‘Legend of the Unknown’ – What Makes His Performance Stand Out?

[EPN NP Now reporter Go Nari] Kwak Young-gwang, who has uncovered a new facet of his artistry onstage each week, has advanced to the semifinals.

On episode nine of MBN’s Unnamed Legend—Trot Men’s Ranking War, Kwak competed in the third final round, titled the National Song Battle. After finishing fifth in the one-on-one deathmatch that produced the Top 5, he formed and led a team of lesser-known performers called “Glory of the Unknown.”

In Round 1, the group performed a medley of Jeon Young-rok’s hits, shifting through a range of moods. They opened with harmonies on “Seems It’s Still a Dark Night,” followed by a tender rendition of “Love Is Like Raindrops Outside the Window.” Kwak then donned a leather jacket for rich harmonies on “Evening Glow” and delivered lively dancing during “Don’t Think About It.” For the finale, “Paper Crane,” he moved the audience with a quietly powerful vocal beneath a pinpoint spotlight.

After the performance, actor Kim Kwang-gyu said the stage “evoked memories of school days and military service.” Jeon Young-rok applauded and added, “I’m deeply moved that the younger singers have remade my songs.”

In Round 2’s Top Ace Match, Kwak selected Kim Ji-ae’s “Unforgiving Person,” drawing attention with playful partner choreography and a flirtatious stage presence. Jeon Young-rok praised the choice, saying, “I’m amazed you found this song,” and Kwak replied, “I listened to more than 200 songs to find the right one.”

Judge Kang Moon-kyung advised, “Work on your falsetto and you’ll grow even more,” and offered, “I’d like to study that with you.”

Although not every member of Team Glory of the Unknown advanced, Kwak secured a semifinal berth as an additional qualifier. His ability to sell a concept and his unmistakable determination have consistently drawn attention, leaving audiences eager to see what he brings to the semifinals.
