HD Hyundai announced April 27 that it has won two core research contracts from the U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR) focused on ship design and construction. The ONR, an arm of the U.S. Navy, oversees science and technology R&D for the Navy and Marine Corps.
At a contract-signing ceremony at the ONR headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, Jang Gwang-pil, vice president and director of the Future Technology Research Institute at HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore, and ONR Director Rachel Riley were in attendance.
Under the contracts, HD Hyundai will lead a project to improve ship performance using artificial intelligence (AI). The company said HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at Seoul National University will jointly develop the technology, leveraging HD Hyundai’s advanced digital-ship capabilities.

HD Hyundai also secured a project to develop technologies aimed at increasing shipbuilding productivity. The Future Technology Research Institute at HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore will carry out the research.
The company said the awards establish a framework for joint research with the U.S. Navy in ship design and construction and represent a meaningful endorsement from the U.S. Navy.
Joo Won-ho, president of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, said, “Winning these ONR projects provides a foundation to expand cooperation with the United States in the ship sector. As representatives of the Republic of Korea, we will spare no effort to broaden the footprint of K‑maritime defense.”
