Hyundai Rotem is stepping up its push into the European defense market and moving to establish a local production hub after signing a contract to manufacture Poland-specific K2 tanks in-country.
On the 1st in Warsaw, Hyundai Rotem and Bumar-Łabędy signed a cooperation agreement to produce and maintain K2PL main battle tanks and armored recovery vehicles in Poland.
The deal formalizes local production and sustainment arrangements as the centerpiece of last year’s second implementation agreement for Poland’s K2 program.
The K2PL, a Poland-specific variant adapted for local operational requirements, will be built alongside related variants as local manufacturing expands.
The pact includes a “Polish Solution” strategy to source select key components from Polish suppliers, a step intended to deepen collaboration with the domestic defense industry.
Under the agreement, Bumar personnel will take part in on-site training as part of Hyundai Rotem’s ongoing K2 maintenance program. Hyundai Rotem said the hands-on training will transfer sustainment expertise ahead of serial production and help build a capable local workforce early.
The company plans to use the contract to upgrade Poland’s production infrastructure and establish a K2 production hub for Europe over the medium to long term.
Hyundai Rotem also expects the move to open new export opportunities and strengthen the competitiveness of South Korea’s defense ecosystem by entering foreign markets together with domestic suppliers.
A Hyundai Rotem official said, “By establishing a local production base, we have laid the groundwork to expand our operations in Poland. We will strengthen our position in the European market based on quality and delivery competitiveness.”
