KAI secures tiltrotor solution optimized for South Korea’s military

Efficiency enhanced through a modular open-systems architecture

Officials

Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) has partnered with U.S. defense firm Bell Textron to pursue a High-Speed Medium Utility Helicopter (HSMUH) solution aimed at underpinning the Republic of Korea military’s next-generation air operations.

KAI said on April 29 that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on April 27 at Bell Textron’s headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas, to jointly compete for the South Korean military’s next-generation HSMUH program.

The signing ceremony was attended by senior officials from both companies, including Jo Jeong-il, head of KAI’s rotary-wing division, and Jeff Schloesser, senior vice president at Bell Textron.

The platform at the center of the collaboration is Bell’s next-generation vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, the MV-75, developed with the U.S. Army. On the 15th, Bell formally designated the MV-75 as “Cheyenne II,” a move that has drawn attention in global defense markets. The tiltrotor configuration promises markedly higher speed, range and maneuverability than conventional helicopters.

The companies will evaluate solutions built on the Cheyenne II platform to meet the performance requirements of the South Korean armed forces. They plan to apply a Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) to enable rapid, cost-effective weapon-system upgrades and to field systems that can adapt flexibly to evolving battlefield conditions.

Jo said, “Our cooperation with Bell Textron will enable our military to acquire a powerful weapons system capable of responding immediately to rapidly changing battlefields. By combining KAI’s system-development capabilities with Bell’s advanced technologies, we will deliver the best possible solution.”

Jeff Schloesser said, “South Korea’s next-generation helicopter program will be an important milestone for expanding advanced VTOL technology into the global market and for strengthening U.S.-ROK interoperability.”
