U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees operations in the Middle East, denied claims that a U.S. ship was struck by an Iranian missile.

In a May 4 post on X (formerly Twitter), CENTCOM said, “No U.S. Navy ship was hit by missiles.”

The command added that U.S. forces are supporting ‘Project Freedom’ and are carrying out a maritime blockade of Iranian ports.

That day, U.S. forces launched an escort operation for civilian vessels in the Gulf, deploying aircraft and warships to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM said operations are being conducted in the Persian Gulf for the project and that two U.S.-flag merchant ships successfully transited the strait.

Earlier, Iran’s Fars News Agency reported that one U.S. Navy escort vessel attempting to pass the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf of Oman was struck by two Iranian missiles and withdrew.

Fars reported the vessel ignored warnings from the Iranian navy and pressed on, after which it became the target of missile strikes. “The ship was hit by two missiles and could not continue its voyage, so it turned back and withdrew,” the agency said.
