Urgent reports say a South Korean-flagged vessel was struck in the Strait of Hormuz, and Seoul’s government is investigating.

On May 4, the United States launched Project Freedom, deploying military aircraft and warships to escort civilian ships in the Gulf — the Persian Gulf — and help them transit the Strait of Hormuz safely.

As that operation was underway, intelligence reported an attack on a South Korean vessel, prompting Seoul to verify the report.

According to Yonhap, a government official told reporters, “We have received information that a vessel registered to South Korea was struck, and we are carefully confirming the facts.”

Authorities say the vessel was anchored near the Strait of Hormuz. Investigators say they have collected indications the incident may have been caused by an explosion or by an external impact.

The South Korean government said there were no casualties.

Officials have not yet confirmed the full extent of the damage. Seoul is closely monitoring the situation with relevant ministries.

If necessary, authorities plan to coordinate with local diplomatic missions to take further action.
