[iNews24 Reporter Yoon Lee] Gwacheon City in Gyeonggi Province is rolling out a city-center food festival to give local businesses a lift and expand cultural options for residents.
The city says it will host the inaugural Gwacheon Shopping District Beer Festival for two days, the 9th and 10th, around Central Park and Guldari-gil. Organized by the Gwacheon Shopping District Merchants’ Association, the festival is meant to offer locals and visitors a relaxed spot for fun during Family Month and to breathe new life into the area’s retail scene.
A festival zone around Central Park will mix food, performances and hands-on activities. There will be a beer-friendly food truck area, a nostalgic pojangmacha (street-cart) lane, and booths run by local merchants. Vendors plan to serve eye-catching dishes—whole blanched octopus (tongmun-eo sukhoe), brothy chicken feet, and a variety of skewers—that are sure to draw a crowd.

More than a one-off event, the festival includes linked programs designed to drive real business back into local shops. One interactive promotion asks visitors to photograph the “participating store coupon” banner at the merchants’ association booth, then visit designated stores and place a takeout order to earn discounts or complimentary extras. Officials expect this will steer festival spending toward nearby businesses.
Families and kids will have plenty to do, with children’s booths and play areas on site. On the 9th, the lineup includes a balloon-clown act, a magic bubble show, and a trot music stage, adding lively, family-friendly energy. On the 10th, two evening busking sessions—at 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM—will offer mellow, feel-good performances that turn the park into a cultural relaxation spot.
The city plans to use the festival to expand a “stay-and-spend” culture that links local commerce with cultural content, and to keep nurturing community-centered festivals where residents and merchants mingle.
Jo Young-rae, president of the Gwacheon Shopping District Merchants’ Association, said, “For Family Month, I hope residents and visitors make lasting memories enjoying great food and performances with family, friends, and neighbors. Going forward, merchants and I will continue organizing cultural events and revitalization projects so the Gwacheon shopping district becomes a lively, beloved place for everyone.”
