[iNews24 Reporter Lee Yong-min] “They’re all like our parents.”

On Parents’ Day, May 8, Song Nak-hyun smiled as he watched local seniors enjoy their meals at his restaurant in Ochang-eup, Cheongwon District, Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province.

He runs ‘Best Hanwoo Hyeonjin,’ a spot known for hanwoo (Korean beef). For the past five years, he’s hosted meal-sharing events for neighborhood seniors twice a year, in spring and fall.

That day, he served bulgogi-jeongol (beef hot-pot stew) to about 70 people — both users and staff from the Mokryeong Comprehensive Social Welfare Center.

Because the restaurant doesn’t have enough seats to host everyone at once, the welfare center shuttled groups over in stages.

Song could have used the welfare center’s dining facilities, but he wanted to give the seniors the treat of dining out.

As they finished and headed out, many seniors said, “The meat was tender — we really enjoyed it.”

Song clasped their hands as he saw them off, handing out snacks like candy and rice cakes.

Even after more than a decade in the meat business, preparing such large quantities at once isn’t easy.

He thanked his staff, saying, “Serving large groups at once is tough, but they always do it with a smile.”

“I call it volunteering, but it fills me up, too,” he said. “I’ll keep working hard to bring more smiles to the community.”
