Sometimes you just need to step outside with a light heart and let a cool lakeside breeze reset your mood. Baekun Lake in Uiwang, Gyeonggi Province, sits close to the city while offering sweeping views of Baegunsan and Barasan and a wide, peaceful lake — the perfect easy escape for anyone in the Seoul metro area.

Here’s a quick, free guide to Baekun Lake — an ideal Uiwang stop for a short break.

Baekun Lake stretches across the Hakui-dong area of Uiwang, tucked beneath Baegunsan and Barasan. It wasn’t built as a tourist spot — the lake began as a reservoir in 1953 to supply water for agriculture. Today, both local residents and visitors from the greater Seoul area come here to breathe fresh air and take in the view.

What makes Baekun Lake special is how accessible it is while still feeling scenic. It’s not far from Seoul, Suwon, or Anyang, yet the ridgelines of Baegunsan and Barasan frame the water. Park, take a short walk, and you’re instantly at the water’s edge — perfect for days when you want a quick mood boost rather than a long trip.

The lake also offers water activities like paddle boats and motorboats. Prices range from about 20,000 KRW (approximately $15) to around 60,000 KRW (approximately $45), so two people can enjoy boating without breaking the bank. Families, couples, and friends can easily spend a fun afternoon paddling around Baekun Lake.

The highlight is the Baekun Lake ecological trail. The boardwalk forms a roughly 3 km (about 1.9 miles) loop and is about 3 m (roughly 10 ft) wide, so you can stroll around the lake comfortably. Most of the path is flat, which is easy on the knees, and the lake stays in view for much of the walk — a nice, calming constant.

Unlike a typical park path that hugs a road, much of this trail follows the shoreline, which makes the walk feel like a true lakeside escape. It’s free to use, so it’s a low-effort, high-reward spot in Uiwang. You can complete the 3 km loop without an entrance fee, and plenty of cafes and restaurants nearby make it easy to extend your visit. Use the Baekun Lake Embankment Public Parking Lot for parking.

The trail is lovely at night, too. Lights are set along the boardwalk so you can walk safely, and the arched pedestrian bridge and several lakeside spots are fantastic photo backdrops. The lighting is subtle rather than flashy, making this a great after-work stroll or a calm post-dinner loop.

That said, the subtle lighting can make some stretches feel darker than you might expect. For the best experience, enjoy the mountain and lake views during the day, then try a short illuminated walk in the evening.

Baekun Lake is consistently recommended because it’s not just a place to walk — it’s a full little outing. If you come from Seoul for a breath of fresh air, you’ll find lots of cafes and restaurants with lake views and Baegunsan as a dramatic backdrop. After your walk, unwind at a café or enjoy a meal at a nearby restaurant. The Lotte Premium Outlet Uiwang Time Villas — a great spot for shopping — is also nearby at 1 Barasan-ro, Uiwang, Gyeonggi-do.

The plan is simple: walk the Baekun Lake ecological trail for about an hour, then relax at a lakeside café or head to Time Villas for food and shopping. If the weather’s great, make the lake walk the focus; if it’s uncertain, lean into cafes and the outlet instead.

Baekun Lake ecological trail in Uiwang is the perfect no-fee spot to clear your head. Rent a paddle boat, take a leisurely walk, and carve out a little time to refresh yourself.
