Optimized Through Model Compression and Data Training
The government plans to deploy domestically developed artificial intelligence (AI) in the defense sector, where the highest levels of security are required. The conflict involving Iran has underscored the strategic importance of sovereign AI, prompting officials to accelerate AX adoption across defense. Authorities expect collaboration among the private sector, government and military to expand South Korea’s AI ecosystem.
SK Telecom (017670) said on the 14th that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at its SKT Tower headquarters in Jung‑gu, Seoul, with the Ministry of National Defense to promote defense AX through a program titled “Use of Domestic AI Foundation Models in Defense,” led by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
SK Telecom and the Ministry of National Defense will develop and field-test defense‑specific AI models built on a domestic AI foundation model. The partners will also cooperate on collecting and using open defense data, and on providing support for advanced graphics processing units (GPUs), among other initiatives.
This is the first time an AI selected for the domestic foundation model project will be applied in the defense domain. In January, SK Telecom’s core team advanced to phase two of the domestic foundation model program with A.X K1 — a massive model that became the first in South Korea to exceed 500 billion parameters.
The company said the collaboration is significant because it demonstrates practical utility beyond model development. SK Telecom plans to lead development of defense‑tailored AI using its large language model (LLM) expertise and GPU‑as‑a‑service infrastructure. The firm will apply model‑compression techniques and continue training the AI on defense datasets to optimize performance in military environments.
Kim Myung‑guk, head of SK Telecom’s Industrial AI Division, said, “With integrated capabilities spanning AI technology, data centers and communications, we are well positioned to strengthen K‑Defense competitiveness. We will continue expanding AI use in sectors where data sovereignty and security are critical — including finance, manufacturing, healthcare and the public sector — to bolster K‑AI capabilities.” Jeon Jun‑beom, director of the Defense AI Planning Office at the Ministry of National Defense, added, “We will keep deepening cooperation with the private sector to effectively introduce AI across the defense enterprise.”
