[Anchor] Israeli forces conducted an airstrike in the Gaza Strip aimed at Hamas’s top military commander. Media reports suggest the operation likely succeeded, but officials say civilian casualties were heavy. Producer Shin Joo-won reports. [Reporter] Israeli forces launched a targeted operation to eliminate Izz al-Din al-Haddad, the senior military leader of Hamas. Aircraft struck a residential building in the Rimal neighborhood of Gaza City, then carried out follow-up strikes hitting vehicles on a nearby street. The attacks killed at least seven people, including one child. More than 50 people were wounded and transported to area hospitals. 「Abu Yusef / Witness」 Children and women were staying in the residential area when a huge barrage of missiles rained down, and the bombing set the neighborhood on fire. Officials have not confirmed whether al-Haddad was killed. CNN, citing a senior Israeli official, reported the targeted operation appears to have been successful. Israel has accused al-Haddad of bearing responsibility for the Hamas-led surprise attack on Israel in October 2023. Separately, Israel agreed to extend the cease-fire with Lebanon for another 45 days. Under U.S. mediation, the two countries entered a truce on April 16 and have continued to renew the cease-fire while negotiating an end to hostilities. In Ukraine, Russian forces launched more than 1,500 drones and missiles, producing a rising toll of civilian casualties. Over two days, from the 13th to the 14th, Russian strikes destroyed 180 facilities and killed at least 27 civilians, according to initial tallies. Reuters described it as the largest two-day aerial assault since the conflict began. Ukrainian forces struck back, reporting attacks on targets including an oil refinery in the central Russian city of Ryazan. With mounting concern that Russia is deliberately targeting civilians to pressure Ukraine into surrender, President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the offensive and warned of strong retaliation.
