Israel carried out an airstrike in the Gaza Strip targeting Izz al-Din al-Haddad, the top military commander of the Palestinian armed group Hamas. Israeli officials said they believe he was killed.

On May 15 (local time), the BBC reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz said in a joint statement they had carried out airstrikes targeting Haddad.

Netanyahu said Haddad was responsible for killing, abducting and wounding thousands of Israeli civilians and soldiers.

Witnesses said three missiles struck a residential building from two directions simultaneously, and that a fleeing vehicle was later hit.

The Israeli government has not officially confirmed Haddad’s death, and Hamas has not disclosed his status. However, an Israeli official told the BBC that “Haddad, one of the perpetrators of the Oct. 7 massacre, was killed,” and a senior Israeli security official told CNN that early indicators suggest the assassination operation succeeded.
