[Sports Seoul | Reporter Won Seong-yun] The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, the Big Island’s first resort, has unveiled a newly renovated destination spa as part of a major makeover meant to reset the standard for wellness travel in Hawaii.

The overhaul — a roughly 260 billion KRW (195 million USD) investment — introduced a high-end facility called the Spa at Mauna Kea. The spa occupies both indoor and outdoor spaces totaling about 620 pyeong (roughly 22,000 sq ft, or about half an acre).

Marketed as a true destination spa — where the spa itself becomes the reason to travel — Spa at Mauna Kea reimagines Hawaii’s dramatic natural landscape and healing traditions through a modern luxury-wellness lens. The goal is more than relaxation: it’s an immersive journey designed to restore balance to body and mind.

Programs are carefully crafted around the Hawaiian healing philosophy Ho’ōla i Loko, which holds that healing begins internally and radiates outward. Each spa journey starts with a traditional Hawaiian chant (oli) and uses natural elements — sea salt (paʻakai) and plant-based healing practices (laʻau lapaʻau) among them — to cleanse and reset energy.

The signature massages take cues from lomilomi, the Hawaiian massage tradition, and incorporate volcanic stones and native flowers. Those traditional touches are paired with contemporary, high-end treatments like LED light therapy and custom muscle-recovery protocols.

The spa’s design emphasizes a seamless connection to nature. Eleven outdoor treatment rooms — including couples’ suites — feature private lanais (balconies), outdoor showers, and tubs overlooking landscaped gardens. After treatments, guests can linger in gender-separated purification gardens, steam rooms, saunas, or on the shared wellness deck, which includes a vitality pool for quiet reflection and rest.

Craig Anderson, vice president of resort operations at Mauna Kea, called the Spa at Mauna Kea “a symbolic space that opens a new chapter for the resort,” saying it will be a singular sanctuary to deeply experience Hawaii’s nature, culture, and healing traditions.

To mark the spa’s grand opening, the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is offering a limited “Art of Renewal” package. Guests who stay three nights or more will receive a $200 spa credit per day to enhance their wellness experience.

The historic Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, developed by the Rockefeller family, completed its largest renovation in its 60-year history this March. All 252 rooms were refreshed, an adults-only infinity pool was added, and a gallery showcasing more than 500 pieces from the Rockefeller art collection was created. A grand reopening event is scheduled for June 5. socool@sportsseoul.com
