Three Summer Hacks to Beat the Heat

Summer
Ice cream

Have you ever pulled ice cream from the freezer on a hot day only to find it rock‑hard? Summer has its quirks, but a few simple tricks can make the season easier. Here are three practical tips you may not have tried.

Chill a Drink in 10 Minutes

Putting a newly purchased beer or soda in the fridge can take a long time to cool. Even canned beverages often need extra time to reach a refreshing temperature.

Here’s a quick trick: wrap the can or bottle in a kitchen towel and wet it so it’s damp but not dripping.

Place it in the freezer for 10–15 minutes. The moist towel accelerates heat transfer, cooling the drink far faster than freezing it on its own.

How to Keep Ice Cream Scoopable

Ice cream kept in a standard freezer often becomes too hard to scoop. Lowering the freezer temperature isn’t usually practical.

One easy solution is to store the ice cream container inside a resealable plastic bag before freezing. The extra layer helps moderate temperature swings so the ice cream stays softer and more scoopable.

This keeps the texture more consistent and easier to scoop. If the ice cream is already too hard, heat your spoon under hot water, wipe it dry, then scoop — the warm spoon cuts through much more easily.

Freeze Water Bottles So They’re Ready to Drink

Frozen water bottles are lifesavers in summer, but if you freeze them full the cap or mouth can ice over, blocking the flow.

Don’t fill the bottle completely. Fill it about halfway, then freeze.

Lay the bottle in the freezer at a slight angle rather than upright. That keeps the bottle mouth clear so you can drink immediately after removing it from the freezer.

It’s a simple tweak that makes it easy to grab a cold bottle from the freezer whenever you need one on a hot day.
