“A 100,000 KRW gap (approximately $75)” — The controversy over Chef Ahn Sung-jae’s restaurant review: What’s the real story?

Chef Ahn Sung-jae, who won over viewers with his perfectionism on Netflix’s Black & White Chef, now finds his fine-dining restaurant Mosu Seoul at the center of a wine-swapping controversy. On April 21, 2026, a diner using the handle \”A\” posted on a major online community about a shocking experience during their visit.

According to the diner, the wine-pairing menu listed a 2000 vintage Château Léoville Barton, but the wine poured into their glass was a 2005 vintage — about 100,000 KRW (approximately $75) cheaper. At a high-end restaurant where a meal with wine pairing easily tops 500,000 KRW (approximately $375) per person, this vintage mix-up was a serious shock for food lovers.

Allegations of intentional deception emerge

The situation escalated beyond a simple serving error because of the sommelier’s handling. When diner A asked to photograph the wine bottle for their records, the sommelier stepped away briefly and returned with an empty 2000 vintage bottle from a staff-only area and placed it on the table.

By then the glass already held the 2005 vintage, and the staff had merely swapped in the 2000 bottle for the photo — the vintage listed on the menu. When the diner noticed the wine’s aroma and taste didn’t match the menu description and politely asked for confirmation, the sommelier admitted they had poured the 2005 vintage. Rather than offering a sincere apology, the sommelier responded casually with, \”We can let you taste the 2000,\” which only heightened the diner’s anger.

As the controversy spread, Mosu Seoul issued an official statement on April 23, 2026, and apologized. The restaurant said it failed to provide clear guidance during the April 19 wine-pairing service, which caused confusion, and acknowledged that their follow-up response lacked sufficient explanation and left many guests deeply disappointed.

They added that everyone at Mosu, including Chef Ahn Sung-jae, is treating the matter with the utmost seriousness and that they personally apologized to the affected diner. The team pledged to review service across the board and promised to do everything possible to prevent a recurrence and rebuild the trust that was damaged — not to issue a mere symbolic apology.

The challenge of restoring Michelin’s value and trust

This incident raises a fundamental question about the trust and professionalism that fine dining promises. Chef Ahn has long set uncompromising standards for ingredient knowledge and dish execution on TV and in interviews, so a service-quality scandal at his own restaurant lands especially hard.

Fine dining sells more than flavor — it sells the value of honest, meticulous service. After this controversy, many are watching to see whether Mosu Seoul will return to that original commitment and rebuild genuine trust with its guests. People are paying close attention to Chef Ahn’s next move.
