[CBC News] Crew members extinguished a fire aboard an HMM-operated small-to-medium bulk carrier that had been anchored in the Strait of Hormuz.

HMM said that on May 5 an explosion in the port-side engine room ignited a fire. Crew members discharged carbon dioxide (CO2) and brought the blaze under control, extinguishing it in about four hours. The company said CCTV footage shows the crew suppressed the fire, and it plans to conduct an on-site inspection of the engine room soon.

The incident caused no casualties. A total of 24 people were on board, including six South Korean nationals.

Intelligence reports also suggested the vessel may have been struck, but the government is still verifying those claims. An HMM official said the company has not yet determined the exact cause of the explosion, including whether it resulted from an external attack or an onboard malfunction.

HMM plans to deploy tugs to tow the vessel to a nearby berth in Dubai. The company expects the salvage and tow operation to take several days.

Meanwhile, HMM is operating five vessels near the Strait of Hormuz: one container ship, two tankers, and two bulk carriers.
