Two days before the union’s planned general strike on the 21st, attention has returned to a video showing union leader Choi Seung-ho appearing in an employee vlog produced by Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor newsroom.

On the 19th, Samsung Electronics’ management and the union conducted a second post-adjustment session at the Central Labor Relations Commission. Ahead of the session, company Vice President Ye Myeong-gu said he would “do his best,” while Choi Seung-ho, who leads negotiations as head of the cross-company union’s Samsung Electronics branch, declined to comment.

As talks entered their final stages, signs of internal discord emerged within the union. Choi reportedly posted in a members’ chat, “Once this is finished, let’s consider splitting the union,” and added that “Jeonsamno and Donghaeng are going too far.” He is also said to have commented, “I can’t keep handling DX (finished products),” a remark that sparked controversy.

After those remarks circulated, some union members criticized the language as effectively excluding certain business units. In particular, employees in the DX division renewed complaints that the union leadership has steered negotiations to favor the semiconductor (DS) division.

Choi is from the DS division. DX employees have long argued that bonus and compensation negotiations have not adequately reflected their interests.

Choi’s past background has also been revisited online as he pursues a hardline strategy. Three years ago, he appeared in an official Samsung video introduced as a lead instructor for semiconductor training who also works as a clay artist.

In that video, Choi described developing automation systems and training employees, and he expressed affection for the company.

Online reactions are split: some ask, “Why did an employee who loved the company become the union leader?” while others warn that a full strike could put strain on the economy.
