In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, long associated with Ebola outbreaks, the epidemic has intensified and the death toll has surpassed 200.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised the national risk level to \”very high,\” and countries including the United States and the United Kingdom have tightened screening and entry restrictions.

On the 23rd (local time), AFP reported that the DRC government said 204 of 867 suspected cases have died in the outbreak, a sharp rise from the 177 suspected deaths WHO reported the day before.

WHO said the virus is spreading rapidly within the DRC and upgraded the national risk level from \”high\” to \”very high.\” The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention warned that 10 neighboring countries — including Uganda, Angola, Burundi and the Central African Republic — are at risk.

Local unrest is growing. In Mongbwalu in eastern DRC, residents protesting containment measures set fire to a tent clinic, allowing 18 suspected patients to flee. In the village of Lewampara, a clinic was also torched after authorities restricted the recovery of bodies.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said three volunteers appear to have been infected while working locally in late March. If confirmed, that would push the start of the current outbreak back by roughly one month from previous official estimates.

Countries have also stepped up screening. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) added Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport to its list of airports with enhanced Ebola screening, following Washington Dulles International Airport. The U.K. is operating a monitoring program for travelers arriving from Ebola-affected countries.
