폴란드Hyundai Rotem has formally launched efforts to establish local production of the Polish variant of its K2 main battle tank.

On April 27 (local time) in Warsaw, Hyundai Rotem said it signed a cooperation agreement with Bumar Wabendy, a unit of Poland’s state defense group PGZ, to manufacture and maintain K2PL tanks and armored recovery vehicles in Poland.

The agreement follows the second K2 implementation contract signed last August and, crucially, defines concrete steps for local production and sustainment. The companies expect to expand local production to related variants, such as combat engineer tanks and bridgelayers, through further negotiations.

The K2PL is a tailored variant adapted to the Polish military’s operating environment, and the partners plan to produce additional platform-based variants locally. Notably, the deal includes a \”Polish solution\” that substitutes some key components with Polish-made equipment. Localizing major systems—such as front- and rear-facing surveillance suites and inertial navigation units—should strengthen Poland’s defense-industrial base and deepen industrial linkages.

Maintenance cooperation will proceed in parallel. Hyundai Rotem says it will support technology transfer and build operational capability from the pre-production phase, including deploying Bumar personnel to take part in hands-on training within Hyundai Rotem’s ongoing K2 maintenance program.

Hyundai Rotem added it will use the partnership to enhance its production footprint in Poland and to reliably fulfill the second K2 implementation contract. After delivering the first batch ahead of schedule, the company aims to turn Poland into a European production hub based on its proven execution record.

If Poland becomes a K2 production hub, Korean suppliers could follow, boosting joint ventures and export growth. Hyundai Rotem has accelerated measures to reinforce the defense ecosystem, expanding R&D investments and broadening financial support for partner companies.

\”Establishing a local production base lays the groundwork for expanding the K2 program in Poland,\” a Hyundai Rotem official said. \”We will strengthen quality assurance and logistical support to enhance Poland’s security and industrial competitiveness, while contributing to the sustainable growth of South Korea’s defense industry ecosystem.\”
