321 Million Seniors: China’s Aging Population Hits New Milestone

According to the 2025 1% population sample survey released by China’s National Bureau of Statistics on the 22nd, the population aged 60 and over was an estimated 321,220,000, accounting for 22.9% of the national population. Those aged 65 and over numbered 223,090,000, or 15.9% of the population.

The 1% population sample survey is conducted in years ending in “5” to track demographic changes between decennial censuses. The figures are estimates as of midnight on Nov. 1, 2025, based on sampled data. The survey’s sample size was 20,520,000 people.

The national population stood at 1,405,450,000. Of that total, children aged 0–14 numbered 214,360,000 (15.3%), and those aged 15–59 totaled 869,870,000 (61.9%). Men made up 51% of the population and women 49%.

There were 514,650,000 households nationwide, with a household population of 1,296,850,000. The average household size was 2.52 people.

By residence, urban areas accounted for 952,080,000 people, or 67.7% of the total, while rural areas had 453,370,000 residents.

By education level, 272,330,000 people had completed college (including junior colleges); 242,720,000 had graduated from high school (including vocational secondary schools); 452,830,000 had completed middle school; and 331,220,000 had completed elementary school.
