The U.S. military said it struck missile launch sites in southern Iran and an Iranian vessel that had attempted to lay mines, describing the action as self-defense.

On the 25th (local time), U.S. Central Command said in a statement that it carried out self-defense strikes against Iranian military facilities and vessels in southern Iran that posed a threat to U.S. forces, according to reports from The New York Times and CNN.

CENTCOM spokesman Tim Hawkins said the strikes targeted missile launch positions and Iranian ships that attempted to deploy mines. He added that CENTCOM is continuing to defend U.S. forces while exercising restraint during the ongoing pause.

Earlier the same day, local media reported explosions near the southern port city of Bandar Abbas and along nearby coastline near the Strait of Hormuz. The Times of Israel cited Iran’s Mehr News Agency saying blasts were heard east of Bandar Abbas but that the situation was under control and not a cause for alarm. The origin of the explosions has not yet been confirmed, and officials have not issued an official statement.

The semi-official Tasnim news agency reported three explosions in Bandar Abbas. Bandar Abbas is a major southern port and a strategic hub that hosts key Iranian navy and air force bases. Fars News Agency also reported similar noises near Sirik and Jask, both close to the Strait of Hormuz.

Even though a cease-fire that began last month remains in effect, the United States and Iran have continued intermittent military exchanges. Earlier this month, U.S. forces struck Iranian missile and drone sites that were targeting a U.S. warship.
