China Travel Demand Skyrockets: Summer Bookings Jump 105%

Demand for travel to China is surging. Modetour reported 19,556 travelers to China in April, roughly a 31% increase year over year. Growth stayed strong in May at about 40%, and summer peak-season (July–August) bookings jumped roughly 105% compared with last year.

Industry observers say China is staking out a solid position as the go-to short-haul international destination, thanks to visa-free travel, short flight times, affordable on-the-ground costs, and an increase in available flights.

For the summer peak season, booking shares were led by Mount Baekdu (41%), Zhangjiajie (21%), Qingdao (8%), Inner Mongolia (5%), and Shanghai (4%). Baekdu and Zhangjiajie continue to draw steady demand from middle-aged and older travelers seeking scenic nature spots. Inner Mongolia is pulling in new visitors with its striking grasslands and desert landscapes. Qingdao and Shanghai are increasingly popular with people in their 20s to 40s, who favor city-style packages that combine food, shopping, and flexible free time.

Modetour has refined its lineup to match these trends. Scenic-area packages now emphasize expert guides and safe, well-run local operations, while big-city offerings focus on looser itineraries and immersive experiences. The company has also expanded promotions—centered on fixed fuel-surcharge fares—to help reduce peak-season costs.

“Customer segments and destination choices are becoming more diverse,” said Song Heon-taek, head of Modetour’s China business division. “We’ll strengthen reliable operations for Mount Baekdu and Zhangjiajie while expanding offerings to reflect new demand for Inner Mongolia, Qingdao, and Shanghai. Our aim is to grow China travel into a core pillar of the nearby package market.”
