As cease-fire talks with Iran faltered and President Donald Trump expressed frustration with the negotiations, the U.S. carried out a fresh strike on Iranian military sites on May 27 local time. It was the second set of strikes in two days, coming after operations on May 25.

U.S. officials told Reuters and other outlets the strikes hit military facilities in Bandar Abbas, a strategic port city in southern Iran, and were intended to protect maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees operations related to Iran, said it shot down four one-way attack drones (suicide drones) and preemptively struck a Bandar Abbas base from which a fifth drone was about to be launched.

Officials said F/A-18s, F-16s and F-35s engaged and downed the drones, and an F/A-18 struck the ground-control system before the fifth drone could be launched. CENTCOM described the operation as “measured and purely defensive,” saying it was carried out to preserve the cease-fire.

Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported hearing three explosions east of Bandar Abbas in the early hours. The blasts occurred around 1:30 a.m., and the city’s air-defense system briefly activated. Fars said authorities had not yet determined the exact location or cause and that follow-up investigations were ongoing.

The May 27 strikes were the second U.S. attack on Iran since the strikes on May 25. On May 25, the U.S. said it carried out “self-defense” strikes along Iran’s coast near the Strait of Hormuz, targeting Iranian missile sites and vessels it accused of attempting to lay mines in the waterway. CENTCOM said those strikes were “designed to protect our forces from threats posed by Iranian forces.”
