[Herald Economy = Reporter Ko Jae-woo] France’s CMA CGM, the world’s third-largest shipping company, says one of its vessels was struck while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The company said the projectile that hit the ship appears to have been launched from the Iranian coast.
On the 6th (local time), Yonhap News Agency reported that CMA CGM said its ship San Antonio was attacked the previous afternoon while passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Reuters reported that crew members were injured and the vessel sustained damage. The wounded crew members are receiving medical treatment.
Officials suspect the vessel was struck by an Iranian missile. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy warned on X (formerly Twitter) the day before that any ship transiting the Strait must follow routes designated by Iran and would face military action if it did not.
Le Parisien, citing sources, reported the ship was operating as part of then-President Donald Trump’s “Project Freedom” and was being escorted by the U.S. Navy alongside another merchant vessel.
According to the report, the projectile, launched from the Iranian coast, ignited a fire in the ship’s engine room.
Le Monde said French government spokesperson Mod Bresson told reporters after a cabinet meeting, “Yesterday’s shelling of a CMA CGM vessel clearly shows the situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains dangerous.”
Meanwhile, Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot told Radio France Info that 59 French-linked vessels are currently stranded near the Strait of Hormuz. He added that 26 French seafarers in the area are living in poor conditions.
