[Notepet] Local outlets say that as more people treat pets like family during China’s biggest holiday, the Spring Festival, spending on pet-related goods has surged.

  • Xinhua, CGTN and the Global Times all reported ahead of the Spring Festival that sales of pet-only red envelopes (hongbao) and holiday meal sets reached record highs. They also noted that China’s railway authorities have upgraded pet-friendly travel services, making it increasingly common for owners to bring their pets on trains when returning home.

  • Xinhua, in a story titled Homesick travelers bring pets along… China high-speed rail expands entrusted transport services during Chunyun (Spring Festival peak travel period), reported that China Railway significantly expanded its entrusted pet-transport services starting January 28. The number of high-speed rail stations offering the service rose from 54 to 110, and the number of covered trains increased to 170. The report highlighted the rollout of dedicated smart cages—equipped with water dispensers and LCD monitors that track temperature, humidity and blood-oxygen saturation—so owners can feel confident using the service.

CGTN (China Global Television Network) reported under the headline China Spring Festival: Activation of pet-transport services within the high-speed rail network, saying orders for pet transport during this year’s Spring Festival jumped three to four times above normal. The piece highlighted easy booking through the railway app and a system that lets owners remotely monitor their pets’ status in real time.

The Global Times, in a story titled Surge in pet travel during Spring Festival signals shifts in China’s consumer trends, reported record sales of pet holiday goods — from pet-only hongbao (red envelopes) and mahjong-shaped toys to traditional pet outfits made from red silk.

    • The outlet said China’s pet market has evolved beyond a hobby into a core pillar of the “emotion economy,” driven by purchases that reflect emotional bonds between owners and their animals.

  • Chinese outlets commonly suggest that the shift toward viewing pets as family members is reshaping both the national railway system and the retail landscape.
