AI & High-Tech Defense: How South Korea’s Hanwha is Reshaping the Indo-Pacific

Daniel Kim Views

Translation resultIISS [Herald Economy = Reporter Eun-gyeol Ko] Hanwha announced on June 1 that it attended the 23rd IISS Asia Security Conference (the Shangri‑La Dialogue) in Singapore from May 29–31.

At the forum, Hanwha held bilateral meetings with senior government officials from the United States, the United Kingdom and other countries. The company also held high‑level talks with major defense contractors to discuss collaboration on artificial intelligence and advanced technologies, as well as mechanisms for sharing defense capabilities.

The Shangri‑La Dialogue is the Asia‑Pacific region’s largest multilateral security forum, drawing defense ministers, senior military leaders and security experts from across the region.

South Korea used the conference to outline plans to strengthen autonomous defense through advanced technologies — including AI‑based sensing and strike systems, manned‑unmanned integrated combat systems, and enhanced cyber and space capabilities — while pursuing multidimensional security cooperation with international partners.

The Ministry of National Defense said Defense Minister An Gyu‑baek met with delegations from the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House on May 30 and 31 to discuss the security situation on the Korean Peninsula and alliance issues.

Echoing the government’s position, Hanwha said it will leverage the defense capabilities it has developed in land and maritime domains, together with its AI and advanced technology portfolio, to contribute to security cooperation in the Indo‑Pacific and to expand defense and technology partnerships with allied nations.
