This independent trip runs 9 nights and 11 days: you fly into Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) and depart from Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO). The route takes you from France to Italy, visiting Paris, Florence and Rome. It’s a timeless three-city run that works perfectly for honeymoons, family getaways, or adventurous backpackers.

France — Paris [Recommended 3–4 nights]

Paris is pure romance, packed with world-class sights and unforgettable experiences: the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, Notre-Dame, the Seine’s bateaux-mouches, Sainte-Chapelle, the Palace of Versailles and day trips to Mont Saint-Michel. Plan on at least 3 nights to see the highlights in the city and squeeze in a nearby excursion.

You can wander Montmartre to Sacré-Cœur and stroll down the Champs-Élysées—Paris is basically the travel handbook for Europe. If you’re set on visiting both Versailles and Mont Saint-Michel, either trim your Italy time or extend your trip to at least 5 nights so you can savor it all without rushing.

Note: a Mont Saint-Michel day tour takes up a full day and can leave you wiped out. Build the itinerary around your energy level and travel style.

Italy — Florence [2 nights]

A cheap flight from Paris takes roughly 2 hours. You can arrive via Pisa or Florence airport, and when it’s time to head to Rome, hop on the Frecciarossa high-speed train for about 1 hour 30 minutes.

Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance. The Duomo, the Uffizi Gallery, Ponte Vecchio and Piazzale Michelangelo are all close enough to explore on foot—the city is compact and wonderfully walkable. If you’re ambitious, you can squeeze in a day trip to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Another option is swapping the high-speed train for a shuttle or organized tour into the Tuscan countryside for a leisurely, scenic detour.

How you structure this 9-night, 11-day Paris–Florence–Rome route will shape how much of Italy you get to soak up—so plan according to what excites you most.

Italy — Rome [3–4 nights]

All roads lead to Rome. The Eternal City is a must for history and religion buffs: the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Trevi Fountain, Vatican tours, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Spanish Steps are just the start.

If you want to see a lot, aim for roughly 2 major activities per day so you can truly take them in. We also recommend a one-day tour to Naples, Positano and the Amalfi Coast.

That day trip lets you explore cliffside Mediterranean villages and lemon-scented alleys in a single day. If you want a taste of Italy’s coastal charm, this route is a can’t-miss addition to your itinerary.

Tip

Booking is key for this 9-night, 11-day independent trip. Tickets at the door are nearly impossible for the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, Versailles, the Colosseum and Vatican tours. Reserve time slots for your must-see attractions before you leave.

That said, don’t overbook your days—limit big plans to 1 or 2 per day. For day trips, pick the ones you really want and pace yourself so you can enjoy them.

We know you’ll want to pack a lot into 9 nights and 11 days, but for a more satisfying trip, consider leaving 1 or 2 highlights for your next visit.
