Stop Throwing Away Bananas: Use This Simple Water Trick to Last 10 Days

Threw Out a Whole Bunch of Bananas? Fresh-Storage Tricks You Need to Know

Bananas are healthy, naturally sweet, and basically universally loved. But leave them unattended and they’ll go black in no time — and suddenly you’ve got fruit flies to deal with.

That’s especially true in smaller households, where half a bunch often goes soft and gets tossed before anyone can finish it.

So why do bananas ripen so quickly? The culprit is a natural gas called ethylene.

Ethylene seeps out from the stem and spreads through the air, accelerating the ripening process. Tame that gas and you can stretch the life of your bananas.

◆ All you need: just a basin and water

No fridge space? No problem. Start with slightly green, under-ripe bananas. First, rinse the peel under running water to remove dust or any surface gunk.

Next, fill a basin with clean water and fully submerge the entire bunch.

Submerged in water, the bananas aren’t exposed to air, so ethylene can’t speed things up. Done right, this can keep the peel taut and the flesh pale and creamy for up to 10 days.

◆ Want to be even more meticulous?

If soaking feels like too much fuss, try this: separate the bananas and wrap each stem tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil.

That seals the gas exit point. You can also hang bananas from a hook or banana hanger instead of leaving them on the counter — it tricks them into “thinking” they’re still on the tree, slowing ripening.

The most important rule: keep bananas away from apples and avocados. Those fruits pump out ethylene too, and will age nearby bananas faster.

Putting different fruits together because they look cute can backfire — they can all go soft at once, so keep them separated.

If your bananas have already hit peak ripeness, peel and freeze them. In summer, blend with milk for an effortlessly sweet, ice-cream–like treat — no added sugar needed.

So don’t rush to eat bananas out of fear they’ll spoil. With just a basin and water, you can savor them on your own schedule. How do you store your bananas?
