[Sports Seoul | Reporter Wi Su-jeong] Global luxury house MCM celebrated its 50th anniversary by unveiling a fresh vision called SMART Luxury — a forward-looking concept designed for a fast-changing world and a clear signal of the brand’s next chapter.
Founded in 1976 amid Munich’s vibrant art scene, MCM has spent the past half-century championing “mobility” as its defining idea. For its 50th, SMART Luxury speaks to the global nomad: a generation that blurs generational and geographic boundaries and moves seamlessly between digital life and physical travel.
MCM’s take on new luxury is a perfect marriage of function and form. Remaining true to the brand’s principle that form follows function, the designs favor practical innovations — lightweight constructions made for everyday life, hands‑free features, and modular interiors. Sustainability and durability are baked in from the design stage, underscoring the brand’s commitment to future generations.

To mark the milestone, MCM is launching a global campaign called Icons Reinvented, which reinterprets the house’s signature silhouettes. Expect modern takes on iconic pieces — from the Stark backpack to the New Liz shopper — that bring the brand’s philosophy into the present.
The 50th-anniversary program goes beyond fashion, spanning music, art, and cross-cultural events worldwide. The celebrations will culminate during Oktoberfest in Munich — MCM’s birthplace — and include cultural exchanges across Europe, the U.S., and Asia. The brand will also reveal an anniversary logo and revisit its roots through interviews with heritage ambassadors.

Kim Seong-ju, MCM’s Chief Vision Officer, said, “MCM was built for movement over the past 50 years. Heritage isn’t about looking back — it’s about looking ahead. We’ll keep translating cultural currents into design to create the luxury of the next generation.”
Dirk Schönberger, Global Brand Officer, added, “The key word for MCM’s next chapter is evolution. We’ll listen to our community and redefine luxury through practicality and creative freedom.”
Over five decades, MCM has moved in step with scenes from Munich’s underground to New York’s hip‑hop culture and Asia’s pop landscape centered in Korea. Today the brand has outgrown being just a fashion label; it has become a cultural platform shaping the future of the luxury industry. wsj0114@sportsseoul.com
