Global luxury house MCM announced on March 16 that, to mark its 50th anniversary, it will unveil a new brand vision called Smart Luxury.
MCM defines Smart Luxury as a rethink of luxury driven by mobility, digital convergence and generational change. Grounded in modern values that transcend seasons, ages and borders, the brand aims to marry function and style with lightweight constructions tailored for on-the-go living, hands-free features and modular interior designs.
With this vision, MCM is carving out a new direction for luxury aimed at a global nomad generation that moves seamlessly between cities, time zones and digital realms. The brand emphasizes that sustainability and product durability are core principles considered from the design stage—not mere marketing lines.
To celebrate its 50th, MCM will launch a global campaign called Icons Reinvented. The house will reinterpret signature pieces—the Stark backpack, New Rise shopper, Ella Boston and Ottomar Weekender—to bring its Smart Luxury philosophy to life.
The anniversary project will roll out across Europe, the U.S. and Asia as a multidisciplinary program spanning fashion, music and art. MCM says it will continue creative cultural exchanges with its global community, Mavericks, and stage a symbolic high point during Oktoberfest in Munich, where the brand was founded.
MCM will also unveil a 50th-anniversary logo and spotlight the brand’s roots with a special interview featuring Herbert Rieb, an original member and heritage ambassador.
Founded in Munich in 1976 as an alternative to traditional luxury, MCM built its identity by culturally reinterpreting the Bauhaus idea that form follows function. The brand later connected with New York’s hip-hop scene in the 1980s and 1990s and, since the 2000s, with Asian pop culture centered in Korea, expanding its presence in global culture.
